Make Waves. Do Good. Do It Now!
Sometimes life hands you a gift you don’t feel you deserve.
“A Nice Surprise” they call it.
In recent weeks I’ve been nicely surprised.
I’ve been meeting leaders of SMEs in this industry.
They’ve shown me how to be MORALLY INSPIRATIONAL.
And commercially strong.
Yes, during 21 years of coaching…
I’ve met many commercially strong firms of Advisers and Planners.
Some I’ve eventually regretted meeting:
- Their teams dread deadlines such as 5th April.
Deadlines that make them – literally – sick. - Their language reveals dehumanising thinking when talking about their clients (a ‘Book’ or ‘Base’ or ‘Bank’ – something to be bought and sold).
- They’ve no next-generation-leadership strategy for their trusting, hapless team when considering their own exit.
Then there are these recent surprises.
Leaders who’ve shown me fresh ways to Do Good. To Do What’s Right.
They’re leading in combining AI and other technologies (all fearfully absent of moral compass)…
with the compassion and care that is uniquely human.
They’re using their MORAL LEADERSHIP to educate, nurture and inspire generations of clients… to develop confidence and wisdom in the use of their money.
I’ll leave you with a brief story of what Moral Leadership looks like.
First, take a paraplanner.
She notices how miserable and overwhelmed and exhausted her colleagues are. Chasing the next metric and revenue KPI.
She quietly instigates a change in behaviour within her team.
“CLIENTS FIRST. TEAM NEXT. THEN ME.”
She persuades the other teams to follow this thinking and behaviour.
They do. They follow her morality.
6 years later she is the CEO.
Why?
Because the team chooses to follow her.
Because she has become A Leader Worth Following!
Oh, and my understanding is, THEY’VE TRIPLED THEIR REVENUE!
She now ‘Makes Waves’ across this whole business sector – Financial Planning.
There are all sorts of leadership styles.
But I find Moral Leadership to be the most enticing. The most magnetic. The most impactful in the long term.
Long ago, I stopped being impressed by ‘Clever People’.
Today, I’m more impressed by people whose priority is to lift humanity.
So, I’ll leave you with this question (for all of us):
We may be efficient.
We may be smart.
We may be advanced.
But are we directing our professional priorities to doing what’s Right, what’s Good… for others?
And are we doing that… today?
At Soul Millionaire we love to set aside (1-2-1, Pro Bono) time to really LISTEN to Leaders. Helping them to think about their complex role.
They tell us that we help them think More Clearly, More Courageously, More Creatively.
